Daily Obstacles that Cause Car Accidents

Motor vehicle accidents are pretty common occurrences. Most of us have either seen a car accident or been in one of them. Still, there are some situations, areas, and times of the day where drivers are more vulnerable to experiencing a collision. Unfortunately, drivers cannot always prevent a car accident from happening. It is important to stay informed about specific vulnerabilities that may lead to an accident. This will allow drivers to stay cautious and conscientious while on the road.

Areas of Risk

Oftentimes, drivers feel comfortable in areas they are familiar with because they know the roads and what to expect. But for some reason, most car accidents occur within 25 miles of home. This false sense of security when we are driving in areas you are familiar with basically causes our brains to go into autopilot. When you are not aware of your surrounds, mistakes to happen easier and could eventually lead to an accident.

A lot of accidents seem to happen at stoplights. Stoplights are regulated areas, but they are hot spots for rear-end collisions. Rear-end collisions happen for many reasons, including faulty brakes or a distracted driver who hasn’t noticed a red light. These sorts of accidents regularly lead to injury and car damage. Intersections are also risky areas and if you haven’t noticed already, there are many drivers who have difficulty understanding “the right-of-way.” Drivers make risky turns, which can lead to side-impact collisions.

Another common and risky area accidents occur is in parking lots and garages. Speed levels in these areas are relatively low and there are usually lots of cars and pedestrians zooming around. These areas tend to have few regulations, which can confuse drivers. Most accidents in parking lots don’t usually end up with severe injuries or fatalities, but minor damages to cars are extremely common. Anyone else gets mysterious scraps and nicks popping up? Not cool!

Risky Times

When roads are busy, there is a not so surprising increase in motor vehicle accidents. Rush hour is defined as “one of the busiest parts of the day when people are either traveling to work in the morning or at home at night.” It is a particularly vulnerable time for drivers to be on the road. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), most accidents tend to happen between 3 pm and 6 pm, mainly because of the high volume of vehicles on the road. To add to this trend, even the day of the week matters when it comes to car accidents. Saturday is considered to be a dangerous day to drive. Many employees have weekends off and many spend Saturday running errands or driving to events. Saturday is also a popular day for going out and drinking, which may lead to an increase in drunk driving incidents. According to the NHTSA, the prevalence of impaired drivers on weekend nights increased 48% since 2007, from around 8.6% of drivers to 12.6%.
