Texting- Not the Only Distraction While Driving

Everyone knows how texting and driving has become a huge no-no in some states, including California. Texting and driving can cause endless distractions on the road and, in turn, catastrophic and life altering accidents. But where does it end? Texting is not the only thing causing accidents on the road. It turns out that texting is just one of the many distractions that can cause unsafe driving habits, often leading to life-shattering accidents on the road.A study administered by State Farm insurance that started back in 2009 surveyed thousands of drivers each year. It showed that while many drivers still text and drive, they also admitted doing other distracting things on their cell phones such as checking their email, browsing their Twitter and rummaging through their other social media pages. The survey also showed that compared to back in 2009 (six years ago), the amount of drivers who have admitted to accessing the internet or checking their social media pages has doubled. Because it takes hold of a driver’s attention and requires at least one hand to do, texting and driving is one particular instance that can cause distractions and car crashes in the blink of an eye. What does emailing and checking social media pages require? Just about the same, if not more. These trends are a growing safety concern for all vehicles on the road as new studies show that 1 in 3 car accidents happen due to a negligent party being distracted on their cell phone. When you are driving, try putting your phone on silent so you do not have the urge to check it. Or, place it somewhere you cannot reach so you can stay vigilant on the roads to keep yourself and other people safe as well.
