Large Truck Accidents
If you learned to drive in a driving school or some other educational setting, you probably learned to be cautious when driving near large trucks. For instance, they may have instructed you to never pass a large truck on the right side because the driver of the large truck will not be able to see you in their blind spot. Most cars on the road have a blind spot that the mirrors cannot cover, so image the amount of blind space that a driver of a larger truck has. Other safety rules include not tailgating a large truck, try to avoid driving between two large trucks, and always give them enough space to stop. The biggest difference between large trucks and cars is the length of time it takes for each to stop, which is why the space between a large truck and a car is important. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported approximately 3,900 fatalities (or about 7%) and roughly 104,000 severe injuries in 2012 as a result of large truck accidents involving smaller vehicles (nhtsa.gov 2014).
