Whether you are riding a bicycle for leisure, for exercise, or for training, the rules of the road still apply. According to the Department of Motor Vehicles, “more than 100 people are killed and hundreds of thousands more are injured in bicycle collisions” (dmv.gov, 2016). As a cyclist on the road, it is important to keep in mind that we all have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists. Although, many cyclists tend to forget that they must follow the basic road rules as well, which often leads to injuries or deaths of the cyclist. Bike laws are not the same in every state of the U.S. However, riding a bicycle on a road that is shared with vehicles can be just as dangerous regardless of the state you are in. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published data from 2013 that indicated “over 900 bicyclists were killed and there were an estimated 494,000 emergency department visits due to bicycle-related injuries” (cdc.gov, 2016).
